What Changed? Middle Ages and Renaissance Differences

The purpose of art
Middle ages: to glorify god
People are consumed and preoccupied with feeding and providing for their families
Renaissance: to glorify the individual and Greeks/Romans
With stable governments, economy, and efficient food production-people have more money and are not concerned with feeding their families...now concerned with discovery
DO NOT DENY GOD'S GIFT ex. If you had the talent to paint-you SHOULD paint!

Politics
Middle Ages:Local and Feudal lords
Renaissance: centralized power through kings of England (Henry VII/Henry Tudor after War of the Roses), France(Louis XI after loss of nobles in Hundred Years' War) and Spain (marriage of Frediands V of Aragon and Isabella of Castile and the expulsion of Mores and Jews from Spain)

Society
Middle Ages:
centered around Church (stay in your place; fulfill the role you were born to play and ONLY that)
Renaissance: secular world vital part of life (question a little; focus on individual talents)

Religion
Middle Ages: focus of one's life
Renaissance: important but not most dominant concern

Education
Middle Ages: Church promoted it to prepare students for relgious life
Renaissance: Stressed teaching of history, arts, ethics and public speaking

Progress-
Middle Ages- All good things have been done in the past. All knowledge comes from the Bible and Aristotle; observation (which is what we base our knowledge on in the present day) is not a valid means of obtaining information. Tommorrow we won't know more than we did today.
Renaissance- This thinking starts to change. We start looking to the past, thinking about writing and art and moving into the future. People believed that if the church was wrong about something then everything else they must be teaching may be incorrect...this let to DISCOVERYY!
People believe that human progress is possible & necessary. Why do you have to? Why are you on Earth? What is your purpose?
